When he began his 13 year detention on Robben Island, he was 23 years old. The lanky Isaacs is pedantic, careful and supremely capable. His little moustache and rushed mumble suggest a superficial resemblance to a person tangled up in an internal web of intellectual chaos; but this impression is deceptive: Sedick the bomb-maker on the mainland and Sedick the sports administrator on Robben Island had a crystal-clear view of the world around them, and approached every task with the clean, structured attitude of a scientist.
Today Isaacs lives in Crawford, Cape Town. He read for a PH.D in 1990 and became a specialist scientist at the University of Cape Town Medical School. He is now a statistical consultant.
